It is 1911 in Eureka, a port city on the Pacific coast in Northern California. The United States is beginning to understand the scientific advances of Testla, Curie, and Einstein while taking advantages of the inventions of Edison, Bell, and Diesel. It is a time of growing wealth and industrialization. People are moving out of the country into towns and cities to work in factories and send their children to school.

Bradford Stone

In 1862, during the long tail of the American Gold Rush, Tony Beckett stumbled upon a geode in the hills outside Eureka. The geode glowed dimly in the sunlight and when broken open, exploded. He sold his claim to Aaron Bradford for a pittance. Aaron discovered that when the geode is cut into a specific shape it has the ability to magnify and amplify light, converting its own mass into tremendous amounts of energy.

The Bradford Engine quickly became the driving force behind American industrialization, the Eureka economy, and material science.

Law and Politics

All citizens are expected to be polite and gentle to all other citizens. The higher your social class, the higher the expectation.

Eureka society is partitioned into four social classes and movement between classes is very rare and viewed unfavorably.

  • Laborer - hard labor for professionals and merchants
  • Professional - skilled laborers
  • Merchant - owns and managed property such as factories or merchant ships
  • Aristocrat - generational wealth and responsibility for the well being of all citizens

Rules of Aggression

  • No citizen may instigate a fight against another citizen.
  • Grievances may be raised within the law and settled in court or by duel.
  • The law favors higher classes, giving the benefit of the doubt to those who are more responsible.
