> [!info] Work In Progress
Individual characters may have relationships and connections to NPCs. These personal relationships are **traits** and can be used to build action pools like any other trait. Reputations are shared by the adventuring party. Relationships are a personal connection, reputations are shared by those around you. For example: _Old Friend of Captain Vane_ is a relationship trait, but _Loathed by the Pirates of Vane_ is a reputation shared by the entire party; both can be true.
Reputations are rated -6 to 6 and are tracked for each faction. Reputation is important in [[#Negotiation]]. It can change through negotiation, quests, and other interactions.
| Level | Reputation | General Meaning |
| ----- | ------------ | ------------------------------------------- |
| -6 | Reviled | Actively hunted and attacked on sight |
| -5 | Loathed | Widely reviled; most refuse aid |
| -4 | Infamous | Known for serious wrongdoing |
| -3 | Disreputable | Poor reputation; treated with suspicion |
| -2 | Untrusted | Little faith or goodwill |
| -1 | Questionable | Minor rumors or doubts |
| 0 | Unknown | No meaningful reputation |
| 1 | Noted | Recognized, but not well known |
| 2 | Respected | Generally viewed favorably |
| 3 | Esteemed | Trusted and spoken of positively |
| 4 | Renowned | Widely known for notable deeds |
| 5 | Celebrated | Famous and admired |
| 6 | Legendary | Iconic; reputation precedes them everywhere |
## Negotiation
Create a progress stack with a number of cards equal to the NPC devotion less the adventurers reputation (-6 to +6) with the NPCs faction. Note the number of cards to find the initial resistance to the players.
Players work as a group to convince the NPCs to compromise and the NPCs attempt to make a deal that benefits them. Every turn add a card to the stack representing the growing impatience of the NPC. At any time players may accept the current offer, propose a new offer, or leave without one. Negotiations can turn into a long and tedious affair if the players aren't making progress, but eventually an escalation will put an end to it.
| Resistance | NPC Attitude |
| --------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| 0 | **Convinced** Will agree if you give them a way to end the negotiation without looking foolish. |
| 2 | **Influenced** Will agree to an even compromise: "I'll give you half if you do X." |
| 4 | **Indifferent** NPC offers a minor concession to make you go away. |
| 6 | **Cold** NPC will only agree if the terms are substantially in their favor. |
| 8+ | **Refusal** The adventurers must appease the NPCs before they will be granted an audience. |
If resistance starts at 0 or less, due to high reputation, then jump strait to *convinced*. If influence is 8 or more the NPC will refuse to negotiate unless the adventurers can appease them first, usually with a gift or service of some kind.
As the adventurer's negotiate and resistance decreases the NPCs will become more willing to agree to the player's terms. At each threshold the NPC may offer new terms. NPCs will never agree to something that is against their core beliefs.
At the end of the negotiation reputation may permanently increase or decrease by one point, depending on how well the negotiation went. If the NPC feels they got a really good deal then reputation will increase, if they feel like they got cheated then reputation will decrease. This does not depend on influence, only how satisfied the NPC was with the result of the negotiation.
### Social Escalation
- **Ace** (Faux pax): The players say or act inappropriately to the situation.
- **Jack** (Stubborn): Someone digs in their heels and refuses to budge.
- **Queen** (Angry): The conversation turns sharper and emotions flare.
- **King** (Insult): The players say or do something that is interpreted as an insult or challenge.
- **Joker** (Emergency): The situation becomes urgent and can no longer be treated as a normal negotiation.
